Sprouts, sometimes called micro-greens, are very good for us and they can grow very quickly. You can grow them in a variety of ways depending on the seeds you are trying to sprout. You can eat most vegetable seeds as a sprout such as broccoli, radish and rocket. You can grow peas in a pot of soil so that you can cut off and eat the shoots once they have grow. Or you can soak the peas in a jar to get them to sprout. Soak for 24 hours then pour away the water. Rinse and strain the water away twice a day. Then after a few days, you can eat the pea and the small sprout. You can buy bags of dried seeds from grocers as this is a cheaper way to buy the seeds and they will store well if keep dry. Try peas, chickpeas, mung bean, alfalfa, sunflowers, and coriander to start. You can make a cress head too!

All about shoots and sprouts

All about shoots

The food stored inside the seed give it enough energy to grow until the first true leaves and shoots are formed. Once the true leaves grow, it will be able to make its own food, using energy in the sunlight (photosynthesis). Because of this, no matter which way the seed is planted, the shoots always grow towards the light..
